There seems no better place to begin this alphabetical journey through the actresses that contribute to modern day horror than with double-A Italian hellion Asia Argento. Born Aria Asia Anna Maria Vittoria Rossa Argento in September of 1975 she was immediately cast within a epic horror show that for many defines the golden, or in this case silver, age of cinematic terror.

Argento Family Values

This is of course the opera that is the life and works of her famous father Dario. His inaugural and much cited genre classic The Bird with the Crystal Plumage premiered just five years before Asia’s arrival. The elder Argento was in the ascent, plying his way to the very top of his craft. But the creation of subsequent offerings such as Deep Red (Profondo Rosso) (1975), Suspiria (1977) and Tenebrae (1982) would in many ways engulf the director, demanding of him in both time and passion.

Asia Argento has been reported as crediting her move toward acting as a way of forging a pathway into her father’s world. A way in which she could draw his attention and in some way qualify for the time of which he had so little. It is then ironic that her first foray into horror, at the tender age of just 10, was in a production that was not in fact directed by Argento. 1986’s Dèmoni 2 was instead helmed by that other mainstay of Italian horror royalty, Lamberto Bava (A Blade in the Dark 1983). Although Argento did co-write and produce the film as he did with his daughters following stab into dark cinema some years later with Michele Soavi’s The Church (La Chiesa) (1989).
