In August, 2010, six teenagers drowned in the Red River in Shreveport, Louisiana when they jumped into the river to try and rescue their friend, De Kendrix Warner, who began to drown when a sandbar gave way to the swift current and plunged him into 25 feet of water.

Not one of them could swim and soon they all drowned except for Warner, who was rescued by a bystander. According to an article in the Huffington Post, the kids were screaming for help, and then started going down one by one.

These teenagers were among the approximately 4,000 child drowning fatalities that occur every year. These drowning fatalities occur so often because many youngsters are not taught how to swim, which is the best way to prevent drowning. In fact, about 41 percent of Caucasian children and 69 percent of African-American children don't know how to swim.
